John Brown Media, part of a leading global content agency, received top honours at the annual MPASA PICA Awards, held last week at Emperors Palace Hotel Casino Convention Resort. Recognised for their outstanding work in the Youth Category for Totem Magazine, the agency also walked away with Columnist of the Year for Fresh Living magazine and was highly commended in three other categories.
Totem Magazine received the Overall Publishing Excellence Award for the Youth Market – a win that truly reflects the team’s hard work and effective collaboration with the Spur team to provide readers with a compelling, interactive and informative read. With a focus on edutainment and family values, the magazine is brimming with accessible environmentally friendly information that tackles themes like archaeology, technology and conserving the planet in a riveting and fun way.
Totem is designed, written and published by a small team, also known as the Secret Tribe, who ensure its content keeps little ones occupied for hours in a meaningful way – an editorial outlook which was commended by the PICA Judges. They described the title as “an excellent, well-positioned magazine that understands its target audience. Every child dreams of being a super-hero; Totem fosters a sense of belonging to a Secret Tribe that saves the earth through eco-friendly, community-spirited actions. The magazine not only captures the imagination of these young super-heroes, but has a strong educational pull.”
Darrel Bristow-Bovey’s award for Columnist of the Year proved a unanimous one with the judges’ comments reading: “Darrel is back and in a class of his own.” He was recognised for his ‘Home Alone’ column, where he dives into the folly of New Year’s Eve parties, which featured in the January 2013 issue of Fresh Living magazine.
In addition, the John Brown Media team were highly commended in three other categories, including Customer Publishing Excellence: Education, Health, Conservation, Safety and Security (Totem); Customer Publishing Excellence: Retail and Consumer Goods (Fresh Living) and Visual Production of the Year for Fresh Living’s ‘Eat Your Art Out’ feature.
John Brown Media began publishing Spur’s Totem magazine in 2012 and the title joins an existing stable of blue chip clients including Pick n Pay, Edgars and Discovery locally, and Waitrose, John Lewis, Orange, RBS and Spinneys abroad.
