Giant Films director Karien Cherry is in the running for the prestigious Young Director Award (YDA) at this year’s Cannes festival. Karien received the nomination for her award-winning New Balance spot ‘Baby vs Dale Steyn’, for the King James Group. Amongst a record number of over 400 entries, Karien is the only director from the African continent to receive recognition in the Web Film category.
Presented by the Commercial Film Producers of Europe in association with leading advertising platform Shots.net, the YDA is the only award specifically dedicated to celebrating new talent and is widely regarded as the most important fringe event of the annual Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.
The focus of this year’s jury, presided over by François Chilot, was to “discover the filmmakers of tomorrow and seek out cutting edge talent”. They extended congratulations to all shortlisted directors, saying “We have never received as many fantastic, top quality entries to the competition. Every film was scrutinised and heavily debated over by leading production industry figures.”
Karien believes the YDA’s recognition of her spot is significant for all young filmmakers on the continent. “What’s particularly exciting personally is to be shortlisted for the category of Web Films. It’s a hugely demanding medium that requires you to be finely tuned-in to the demands of a sophisticated audience, and in turn offers the opportunity to venture into really interesting territory. I just want to keep pushing to make original content of exceptional quality.”
The 19th CFP-E/Shots Young Director Award ceremony will take place at the Marriott Theatre in Cannes on June 23rd.
