Y&R South Africa delivers one-fifth of Q3 Best Liked Ads

Commercials for two of Y&R South Africa’s clients, Sunfoil and Danone, cracked the Top 10 listing of the recently announced Millward Brown Q3 and Q4 2015 Best Liked Ads list.

The Ultra Mel ‘Taste of Sunday’ TVC was selected as fourth on this coveted list, with Sunfoil’s ‘The Neighbours’ grabbing the eighth spot.

‘Taste of Sunday’ tells the story of a typical family Sunday lunch through the eyes of a young boy as narrator. The screen rotates around the table to show each member of the family enjoying his favourite part of Sunday – when his mother reveals the Ultra Mel custard for dessert. “Each rotation portrays the family in a different set of clothes to convey that Ultra Mel remains part of the dessert repertoire of South Africans from Sunday to Sunday,” explains Taryn Curtis, Account Director at Y&R South Africa’s Johannesburg office. “I think it featured so high on the Best Liked Ads list because it resonated with the whole family, from kids straight through to granny’s generation.”

‘The Neighbours’, produced in a collaborative effort between Y&R SA’s Cape Town and Durban offices, featured a group of boys whose backyard cricket game is interrupted when their ball flies over the fence and lands with a crash. Luckily for them, they find next door One Day International cricket captain AB de Villiers and teammates Hashim Amla, Themba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock as they are preparing a mouth-watering braai with Sunfoil cooking oil. The entire group then heads back over to the house next door, and the boys – young and older – enjoy a hearty game of cricket together.

“Our intention with this commercial was to capture the South African essence through some aspects that make us unique as a nation,” comments Lindsay Leppan, Managing Director of Y&R South Africa’s Durban office. “Our cultural diversity, the beautiful sport of cricket and the food that we love to share together, became our inspiration behind this statement piece for the Sunfoil brand. Most South Africans fondly remember their own days of backyard sporting antics ending when the gang was called in for dinner time, which provided a natural and authentic way of connecting food, people and cricket,” she explains.

Millward Brown’s Best Liked Ads list recognises South Africa’s favourite TV commercials and their advertising agencies, as voted for by the general public (who they consider to be the most important critic). According to them, the ‘local is lekker’ trend remains strong in the Best Liked Ads list. “Local humour and authenticity hitting the mark with slice of life stories that tap into fundamental human truths are still engaging audiences.
